The Muse Melpomene She is the "Songstress"...yet in spite of her joyous singing, She is the Muse of Tragedy and is best represented by the Tragic Mask.  She is sometimes seen with a garland, a club and a sword...and often She is depicted wearing cothurnes, the boots traditionally worn by tragic actors, and a crown of cypress.
